The distance was 150 miles (about 2.5 hours) from Atlanta. (I travel through Chattanooga to get to Stevenson.)
I belong to a Facebook camping group. We usually meet around the second week in April for spring camping and in October for fall camping. All of us drive vans and the
motto for van-camping is "FOLLOW THE WEATHER". (I.E., you want to be somewhere where is it not too hot or cold - the 'Goldilocks zone'.)
I was the first to get there. Other campers come-and-go depending on other events. One attendee had been to see the solar eclipse a few days prior and had changed plans for
the first day. Another had a family committment and another was ending travel to see people around Memphis,TN and came to camp for a while. We had THREE suprise
visits. (Surprise meaning that our Facebook group messages had included plans for arriving and leaving - the surprise visits were from those who came with their plans
changing at the last minute.)
How can I describe a green field next to a river with fishermen and families nearby? The field grass is cut occasionally by the Jackson County Alabama recreation department. The group prefers the area near the road where parking is not a concern for getting stuck in the mud. Several people depend on solar generation for electrical power and need to be away from tree shade. A friend has a 10x10 canopy that allowed us to be under some cover. The first few days were cool and the weather warmed a little each day. We had some rain and on those occasions, I stay in my van and read books. We had several partly cloudy days and we would shift camping chairs to follow-the-sun. We enjoyed watching several barges pass and many fishermen near the culvert. A couple of fisherman gave us part of their catch and we cooked and ate them.
Notes: I do NOT read email when I am camping. Stevenson has good cell service, but I want to enjoy the experience and 'put- the-world-on-hold'. Also, if anyone has any family-information (births, deaths, marriages) that you would like registered with the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution), please let me know. If you find a Bible with family-information in an antique store or sale, I would like to buy it back from you for $5 and document the information and try to find a family relative to return the item to.
