This post is about a trip that a friend and I took with the Atlanta Civil-War Roundtable group on a chartered bus.
-Athens Recap: we had a brief driving tour of some of the Athens historic homes, saw the double barreled cannon, the famous Georgia Arch, Cook & Brother Armory, toured the T.R.R. Cobb House, & lastly toured the Hargrett Rare Book & Manuscript Library going thru their exhibits, archives, & viewing the items just selected for our group.
-Washington Recap: we had a wonderful lunch on the lawn & porch of Bill & BJ DeGolian beautiful 1790 Peacewood Farm. We then had a brief tour of Washington with Claibourne Darden ending with a tour of the Robert Toombs House Museum & tour of Washington-Wilkes House & Museum.
-Our last stop was at the beautiful Confederate Monument recently moved to the area of the Barber Creek Battlefield. Since the battlefield has not been kept up & has recently become almost inaccessible to groups or individuals, we could not tour it at the end of our trip.

The first house that we visited was the T.R.R. Cobb House. The caretakers of the house graceously opened the doors for us on a Saturday - not their normal working hours.

I liked the furniture in the house and especially this piano. I could imagine someone practicing or playing for friends in the room.

During the Civil-War, President Lincoln wrote a letter to A.H. Stevens concerning a prisoner transfer. The original letter is in the Archives Building and I took a picture of both it and the transcript. I have posted the transcript because it is easier to read.

Our tour-director had arranged for us to visit "Peacewood", an antebellum plantation (not open to the public). It was built in 1790 and is lovingly maintained.

We had a fantastic lunch on the lawn. Our tour-director had arranged for a box-lunch to be delivered by a local restaurant. We had lawn tables to eat on and the enjoyable lunch was enhanced by the absolutely perfect spring weather.

Here is a picture of my ham sandwich. (There were other options - one of which was vegetarian.) We also had fruit, chips, and a delicious, homemade cookie.

We returned to outside Athens, Georgia to view the Kettle Creek Battle Monument. It had recently been moved from another location to the area near the battlefield. We only viewed the monument and did not explore the battlefield.
