When I was shopping in a store for souveniers, I saw a map of both Washington Island and Door County. Wisconsin is like a winter-mitt on your left hand held forward - the thumb shoud be on the right side. The thumb is a visual description of Door County. Washington Island is at the top of the thumb.

The bus ride involves stopping at welcome centers and rest stops for bathroom breaks. I do not post any pictures of these stops because I want to focus on the scenery and places of the trip. (Excepton: On the trip back to Atlanta, we staopped at a travel stop which was built as a bridge across the interstate.)
Our tour-planner, Cathy, picked the places to stop and our tour-director, Becky, followed the guide. The Green Bay Packers play their football home games at Lambeau Field. We learned the history of the field and talked about the players. There is a museum that we also visited.

I tried to order the pictures by date - but, the Indian dancers were at night after dinner. The filename orders the pictures and this is the one that appeared next in my display stack. We had dinner at the Oneida Hotel and a group of dancers were very good and entertaining. I took video of their dances, but don't know how to show video with this website. After dinner, many of visited the attached casino. After loosing my 'house' money, I departed.

I wanted to let the viewer see some of the excellent food that we consumed on the trip. Of course, I gained weight. I wasn't able to show dessert in many of my pictures because dinner plates were removed and dessert served.

Part of receiving group seniors, our arrangement was that the hotel deliver and pick-up our suitcases. We are given a time to be on the bus each morning. Our schedule usually includes an hour before leaving, we eat a self-serve breakfast and put our suitcases outside our door for pick-up. When I saw this hall, I took a picture to show all of the suitcases before the staff picked them up and packed them on the bus. Actually, the hotel delivers the suitcases to the bus and the bus-driver and helpers load them into the bottom bays. In addition to our suitcase, most people have a carry-on bag. I use an old backpack for items which I don't want under the bus - for example, medicine and extra change of clothes in case the suitcase is lost.

One of our stops was the Mars Cheese store in Kenosha, Wisconsin. They have a large variety of cheeses and many local products that can only be found in Wisconsin. I resisted the temptation to buy anything here. It was hard as everything looked so good. They also bake kringle and give samples.

On our city-tour with a step-on-guide, we went to the Milwaukee riverwalk area to see a bronze state of "The Fonz" from the Happy-Days tv series. The area was beautiful and it is really nice to have the water in the city.

The step-on-guide recommended that we eat lunch at the downtown 'mall' - that is, 'food-court'. There was a variety of food inside and lunch was 'on-our-own'. Many times, the tour-director arranges with companies for a group lunch and pays for the meal.

This picture is a little hard to see because of the glass. Inside the Discovery Center, a nearby farmer had brought 2 cows in the morning and they are inside the display area. Both are very pregnant and when a calf is born, the process may be viewed and experienced. A docent inside told us about she has delivered many calfs and that the farmer returns and returns the cows to his/her farm.

I hate that this picture is a little blurry. It was taken while the bus was driving through a cow barn. It was big and there were many cows inside. They are inside and allowed to move within the area. In the driveway that the bus used, a truck with feed can drive down it and put food on the right-side so that the cows may put their head through bars and eat. A film inside the Discovery Center showed a robot with floor-brushes can move down the row and push food outside the cow-head reach closer to the bars so that the cow can eat it. The docent of the museum talked about how they keep the cows and stalls clean. This farm was for impregnating females, delivering calves and letting them wean before sale. It was large and we were told about the methane gas that is harvested from the cow waste. The cows are milked three-times a day.

We had dinner at Mader's German Restaurant. Our tour-director had given us a choice of weinerschnitzel or chicken before the tour started. The kitchen knew how many were dining and we had an 'early' seating in order to not affect the flow of the other diners.

Next morning, we had a boat-tour of the area. We saw cottages, which I thought was the wrong-name for the mansions on the water. I noticed on the brochure that this is the last week-end that the tour runs. Many tourist attractions close for the seaon after Labor Day.

We went to a 'fish-boil' in Sturgeon Bay. There are several available, and the one we went to was Pelletier's. The chef said that he's been boiling-fish for about 40 years. They have a large pot of water - it holds 35 gallons of water. They build a fire underneath and regulate the temperature of the fire by adding or removing side-logs. The first insert container has potatoes and they boil for about 10 minutes. Prepared white-fish is added and boiled about10 minutes. Another insert container with onions are added and cooked about 10 minutes. Lastly, prepared corn is cooked. In order to remove the fish oil that has collected on the top of the boiling water, the chef - carefully throws a cup of kerosene on the fire. After the fire dies down, a long stick is placed through the handles of the containers and lifted from the boiling water. The food is carried to the kitchen and put on plates for guests.

The served plate of food was delicious. Note: you have to eat fish using your fingers and not a fork in order to get all of the bones out before placing the food in your mouth. Also, of course, you eat corn on the cob with your fingers. They also served a cherry pie for dessert.

The order of pictures on this file was for the lunch at the Swedish Restaurant. Their food is like a pancake, but it is shaped in a square. It is probably cooked on a grill and spatulas used to fold it over. Also, there were 3 meatballs and delicious gravy. Not shown is the ice cream dessert. The restaurant had a grass roof with goats on it.

The wooden-tower has steps to the top for viewing an area where there have been many shipwrecks. Also, there is a wooden-incline-walkway to the top. The view was beautiful - but, there were many flies at the top due to the fact that the breeze wouldn't blow them away.

We took a ferry to Washington Island. The trip time was about 15 minutes and we were told that the ferry runs every hour in the summer. In the winter, you have to make a reservation days in advance and the ferry is able to break the ice to get across.

House on the Rocks was an attraction that I did not personally visit. A description of the house was that there were many uneven steps. Several of us decided to wait for the group in the ticket lobby. However, there were many decorative art displays and the one in this picture is an example of what we saw.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The pictures are out-of-order from the time of the day and the next picture on file is one from lunch in downtown Wisconsin Dells. The group was scattered and I ate a salad in the restaurant shown.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is an area known as Lost Canyon. We took a tour on a horse-drawn wagon to see it. The guide was entertaining and enjoyable.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We had a sunset dinner tour on a boat at the Dells. We went about 45 minutes to a 'cooking area'. There was a chef who prepared a small steak and shrimp for us. There was a short wooden walkway to an area similar to the one that we had viewed at the Lost Canyon tour.
Our plate of food on the sunset dinner tour.

On our way home, we ate at a wonderful Italian restaurant near Chicago. The food was outstanding and I highly recommend it. Not shown is the octopus appetizer and cannoli dessert.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Indiana, there is a travel plaza and we needed to stop in order to use the restroom. It is very unusual because they built the plaza over the interstate. Both northbound and southbound traffic can use the one stop building.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The pictures are in date order, but not in time-order. This picture shows the lunch we had after the tour of the pig-barn.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The step-on-guide recommended that we eat lunch at the downtown 'mall' - that is, 'food-court'. There was a variety of food inside and lunch was 'on-our-own'. Many times, the tour-director arranges with companies for a group lunch and pays for the meal.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We toured the pig-barn and had a docent tell us about the operation. The farm is owned and kept by farmers who need young pigs to raise. An average sow litter is 16 piglets.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is a viewing area for the pig operation on the second floor. Windows look down to the operation and we were told about the pigs having a farmer care for them who takes a shower before and after entering the lower area. This is done to mminimize germs and disease.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Our tour-director got tickets from the welcome area. We walked to a building where you loaded and rode the spotted-cow bus to the nearby pig-farm. The bus had the opening for the door to the barn and we viewed the area.
The distinctive spotted-cow water tower for Fair Oaks Farms can be seen from the interstate. I saw the tower when I drove to/from Chicago this summer. I didn't know what the farm was but now that I've seen it, I highly recommend going to view the displays and seeing what farm animals are raised in the area.
